ENLASO (translate.com) to Port Localization Tools to Open Source Okapi Framework

BOULDER, CO - NOVEMBER 17, 2005 - ENLASO Corporation, a provider of translation and localization solutions, is porting its localization tools to the open source Okapi Framework. The ENLASO tools suite, which includes Rainbow, Album, Horizon, and Olifant, can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.translate.com/technology/tools.

ENLASO announced the news during the general assembly of The Globalization And Localization Association (GALA) at the Localization World in Seattle in late October.

"This is the kind of initiative that GALA is happy to promote. We look forward to working with ENLASO and becoming a community of supporters as they move forward with their open source efforts," said Hans Fenstermacher, Chairman of the Board of GALA.

The Okapi Framework, a set of interface specifications, format definitions, components, and applications, provides an environment to build interoperable tools for the different steps of the translation and localization process. The goal of the Okapi Framework is to allow developers and localizers to build new localization processes and enhance existing ones to best meet their needs, while preserving a level of compatibility and interoperability. It also offers a way to share and re-use components across different solutions.

Furthermore, the Okapi Framework aims at helping localization-related applications to thrive in an environment where they can interact and where users can choose the most appropriate tool for the task at hand. The ultimate goal is to adopt the industry standards when they are defined and useable. The project is hosted at SourceForge.net (http://okapi.sourceforge.net), a repository of open source applications, and anyone is welcome to join and offer contributions.

Yves Savourel, ENLASO's Localization Solutions Architect and developer of the ENLASO tools suite, notes, "This initiative will allow developers, as well as users, to benefit from a common set of components to implement localization processes more easily. They will be able to integrate tools, filters, and utilities already tested by their peers in their own solutions. The framework is also geared to utilize open standards, such as TMX or XLIFF, and will hopefully help to spread their use across the industry."
